How to play the game

I needed to ship a king size quilt this week. As you can imagine it can be quite costly. Then I remembered Ron had some "priority mail" shipping boxes in the garage. It is the the same price for the box up to 70 lbs. But the biggest box is 12X12X6. As you know cheapness is the mother of invention. So here is what I did.

Pick a quilt and a box

Line the box with a plastic garbage bag

Fold the quilt in half lengthwise then fold until it is about the width of the box

Now fold or roll until it is a square as big as the box. It will be much taller than the box. But should fit in the other dimensions. Put the quilt in the garbage bag that is in the box.

Hold the top of the bag around the vacuum hose. Now suck out all the air.

Secure the garbage bag

Seal the box.

I shipped a king size in the 12X12X6 box for $13.95 instead of the $40.00 the USPS wanted for a quilt full of air. (The pictures are not of the quilt I shipped) So next time you have to ship something think about how much air you are paying for. That 12X12X6 priority mail flat rate box is $13.95 if you print the shipping label at home for up to 70lbs.

I just wish I had a video camera when the package is opened. In my mind it looks like an episode of Laverne and Shirley when they accidentally open an inflatable raft. It could be quite humorous.

I am so glad to see this. I have a similar situation and knew the thing would NOT fit in a flat rate. Now I know it will.

The Dick Van Dyke show had an episode where Laura opens his mail and a rubber boat inflates.......
was hilarious.

I'm glad that you have a blog so that I can catch up on a few details of your life. You made my day with the donuts and the vacuum cleaner. Thanks. We are looking forward to visiting tomorrow, the kids were so excited they wanted to come today. :O)
